Desolation Wilderness Trail Restoration
Partners: Tahoe Rim Trail Association, U.S. Forest Service
Funds Granted: $80,000
On the western slope of Lake Tahoe, Desolation Wilderness is one of the most scenic hiking and backpacking destinations on the Tahoe Rim Trail. Increased use combined with extreme weather events have significantly degraded a popular section of trail, impacting safety, recreational experience, and water quality.
The Tahoe Rim Trail Association has begun work to recruit and engage backcountry trail crew volunteers to help improve this section of trail. Over the course of four summers, volunteers and youth crews will rehabilitate a section of the trail, improving safety for trail users, reducing the flow of sediment into alpine lakes and streams and reducing overall impact on alpine vegetation.
Every dollar contributed to this unique project was matched up to $40,000 through the end of 2018. With the support of private donors, we now have the funds needed to help restore a wonderful section of trail for all to enjoy. Thank you for helping us achieve this crucial match to prevent erosion and improve usability through all seasons.
