Tahoe Fund Adds Five Board Members

November 28, 2011 by sdbx

July 26, 2011

The Tahoe Fund, a new nonprofit that is partnering with public agencies to restore and enhance the extraordinary natural and recreational resources of Lake Tahoe, has named five new members to its Board of Directors. Joining the Board this month are:

  • Blaise Carrig, the co-president of Vail Resorts, including Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Valley Resort;
  • John Friedrich, a former staff member of the Yosemite Conservancy and the League to Save Lake Tahoe;
  • Trish Ronald, an environmentalist, long-time League to Save Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Baikal Institute board member, and Bay Area business woman;
  • Terry Watt, a conservationist formerly with the San Francisco environmental and land use law firm Shute, Mihaly & Weinberger; and
  • Andy Wirth, CEO of Squaw Valley ski resort.

“This is an impressive group of new board members, both in terms of commitment to Lake Tahoe and the experience they bring to the Tahoe Fund,” said Cindy Gustafson, Tahoe Fund Chair of the Board. “The Tahoe Fund prides itself in having board members that represent every aspect of the Tahoe Basin community.”

Carrig was COO and CEO of Heavenly Valley Resort on Lake Tahoe’s south shore from 2002 to 2010 before being promoted to co-president of Vail Resorts Inc. His knowledge of the Lake Tahoe community and Heavenly’s strong support of Basin organizations such as Sierra Nevada College and the nonprofit Tahoe Baikal Institute have earned Carrig local accolades.

Friedrich advocated for sustainable solutions and citizen engagement on key Tahoe Basin issues while program director at the League in 2007. He has over 20 years experience in non-profit organization leadership, the majority of which has been in the field of environmental and community sustainability.

Ronald helped found the Lake Tahoe Transportation and Water Quality Coalition during her 21 years as a League to Save Lake Tahoe board member, and was instrumental in negotiating support among environmental and community organizations for a revised master plan for Heavenly Valley. She also helped develop the Tahoe Baikal Institute environmental exchange program between the U.S. and Russia.

Watt has worked closely with organizations such as the Planning and Conservation League (PCL) and the Nature Conservancy, and her Terrell Watt Planning Consultants firm has provided planning and land use expertise to numerous state and local organizations. She was awarded the PCL’s prestigious Carla Bard Award for Individual Achievement in 2009.

Wirth brings a long-time passion for the mountains, and business and ski industry acumen to the Tahoe Fund board. He was named Squaw CEO in August 2010 after a successful career as a senior executive with Intrawest and Colorado’s Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. A former backcountry ranger, wilderness ranger and Hot Shot fire crew member, Wirth has 25 years of experience working for mountain resort operating companies in North America and Europe.

Tahoe Fund Announces Unique Partnership with Heavenly Mountain Resort and Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort

November 26, 2011 by sdbx

Resorts Launch New Guest Donation Program This Fall, Expect to Raise $75,000 Annually

LAKE TAHOE – August 18, 2011 –
The nonprofit Tahoe Fund partnership with Heavenly Mountain Resort and Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort, called the “Ski Conservation Fund”, will raise an estimated $75,000 annually for the nonprofit Fund to support environmental improvement projects within the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Founded last year, the Tahoe Fund raises private money to supplement the dwindling public funding available for recreation, conservation and education projects in the Lake Tahoe basin. The Fund seeks to help fund bike trails, public parks, restoration projects, interpretive programs, and other amenities that people use and enjoy at the Lake.

“Heavenly and Northstar-at-Tahoe are two world-class recreation destinations as well as highly-respected businesses in the basin,” said Cindy Gustafson, Chair of the Tahoe Fund Board of Directors. “The Tahoe Fund is proud to partner with Vail Resorts in this extraordinary program to raise money for on-the-ground projects that restore and enhance Tahoe’s natural and recreational resources for Lake Tahoe’s visitors and residents.”

Heavenly Mountain Resort and Northstar-at-Tahoe, through their company’s stewardship program, Vail Resorts Echo, will launch the voluntary guest donation program that enables guests to contribute $1 on the purchase of a variety of resort activities and amenities including season pass sales, online ticket purchases, lodging and golf.

“We have a strong commitment to preserving and enhancing the iconic locations that surround our resorts,” said Blaise Carrig, Co-President for Vail Resorts Mountain Division. “Through Vail Resorts Echo, our company’s stewardship program, we are building a legacy of supporting on-the-ground environmental restoration and enhancement work that makes a direct tangible difference in our communities. Partnering with organizations that share our mission, like The Tahoe Fund, exemplifies the spirit of VR Echo.”

“The guest donation program has proven to be very successful at enabling Vail Resorts to both raise money and awareness for critical projects in the areas around our resorts,” said Carrig. “Together with our guests, we are excited to be able to make a commitment that resonates throughout the entire Basin. Because we can’t wait to see the on-the-ground benefits, we plan on making the first round of Ski Conservation Fund grants in early 2012 so that we can start to make a meaningful difference for Lake Tahoe and all those who love and cherish it.”

Tahoe Fund Announces Funding for Van Sickle Bi-State Park, Lakeside Bicycle Trail, U.C. Davis State of the Lake Report

November 26, 2011 by sdbx

New Major Founding Donors Announced at Tahoe Fund Kickoff Dinner Event

LAKE TAHOE – August 16, 2011 – The nonprofit Tahoe Fund announced funding for its first Lake Tahoe environmental improvement projects last night at its kickoff dinner at the West Shore Cafe in Homewood (CA). The Fund will provide:

  • $25,000 to support operations of the new Van Sickle Bi-State Park at the south shore state line,
  • $20,000 for a portion of the Class 1 Lakeside Bicycle Trail at Tahoe City, and
  • $5,000 to fund publication of the annual University of California at Davis State of the Lake Report.

The Tahoe Fund dinner, honoring its major founding donors and attended by 180 people including Senator Dianne Feinstein, California Governor Jerry Brown and Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, also highlighted two major Founders Circle donations.

  • Heavenly Mountain Resorts and Northstar-At Tahoe through Vail Resorts Echo, the Vail Resorts stewardship program, will provide approximately $75,000 a year through a guest donation program.
  • The Robert S. & Dorothy J. Keyser Foundation of Nevada will donate $25,000 a year for four years to support Tahoe Fund operations.

The Tahoe Fund also announced that the Blum Family Foundation donated $50,000 to jump start the Fund. Dick Blum and his wife, Senator Dianne Feinstein, expressed early support for the Tahoe Fund concept of a public-private partnership to implement projects.

“Every single one of our major founding donors should be commended for giving us a solid start to funding on-the-ground environmental improvement projects in the Tahoe basin,” said Cindy Gustafson, Tahoe Fund chair of the board. “The three projects we announced are just the beginning. This year and in the years to come we will be funding many more projects, including some that are very substantial.”

The Tahoe Fund is currently analyzing potential projects to determine priority and feasibility. “We will very carefully consider projects that restore and enhance the natural and recreational resources available to residents and visitors at Lake Tahoe,” said Gustafson.

Heavenly Mountain Resorts and Northstar-At Tahoe have committed to launching a new guest donation program to benefit The Tahoe Fund. Launching this fall, the program will raise funds through a voluntary guest donation program in which guests can contribute $1 on the purchase of a variety of resort activities and amenities including season pass sales, online tickets purchases, Northstar-At-Tahoe lodging and golf.

Free Ski Lift Tickets as Tahoe Fund Launches 2nd Annual Plate for Powder Program

November 23, 2011 by sdbx

Order CA or NV Tahoe License Plate, Receive Two
Free Lift Tickets to Your Favorite Ski Resort

LAKE TAHOE – December 7, 2011 – The Tahoe Fund announced today that 12 major Lake Tahoe-area ski resorts are offering two free Alpine or Nordic tickets for every purchase of a California or Nevada Lake Tahoe license plate between December 12 and April 15.

“Tahoe’s resorts have stepped up again to offer an irresistible deal for skiers and boarders who want to show their support for Lake Tahoe,” said Cindy Gustafson, President of the nonprofit Tahoe Fund. “For less than the price of a lift ticket or day pass, you can ski with a friend, help fund a trail or a park, and get a great-looking plate for your car.”

Over 96% of Lake Tahoe license plate fees go directly to Tahoe recreation and restoration projects of the California Tahoe Conservancy, the Nevada Division of State Lands, and the Tahoe Fund. The Tahoe Fund’s Plate for Powder partnership with the Tahoe area ski resorts supports Tahoe hiking and biking trails, public parks, watershed improvements, and other on-the-ground projects. Lake Tahoe specialty plates generate about $1.5 million annually.

The special resort ticket deal is available only through the tahoefund.org website, where buyers can receive their two free tickets by purchasing a new California Tahoe plate for $50 or a new Nevada Tahoe plate for $61.

“Buying or giving someone a Tahoe license plate helps protect and enhance Tahoe, plus it’s an incredible deal,” said Gustafson.

All major Tahoe ski resorts are participating in the 2nd Annual Plate for Powder Program, including Squaw Valley USA, Alpine Meadows, Homewood, Heavenly Valley, Northstar-at-Tahoe (Alpine and Nordic), Kirkwood, Sugar Bowl, Boreal Ridge, Tahoe Donner (Alpine and Nordic), Royal Gorge, Tahoe Cross Country, and Sierra-at-Tahoe. The free tickets and day passes are valid Sunday through Friday for the 2011/2012 season until supplies run out. Standard holiday blackout dates apply to downhill ski areas, including 12/24-1/1, 1/14-1/16, and 2/18-2/20. Check with each resort for specific holiday blackout dates.

2011: A Banner Year for Tahoe Fund

November 17, 2011 by sdbx

This year was a phenomenal success, as the Fund raised over $800,000 in public and private donations to begin supporting on-the-ground environmental projects in the Tahoe Basin. The fiscal year goal of $1 million is achievable by summer 2012, due much in part to the resounding response from Founding Circle donors.

The Tahoe Fund developed numerous partnerships with California and Nevada public agencies, which are faced with dwindling monetary support for projects focused on recreation, conservation and education/stewardship. In addition, the Fund was instrumental in working with legislative representatives in both states to solidify their backing of the efforts to improve and enhance the amazing resources available to residents and visitors at Lake Tahoe.

Projects
The Tahoe Fund is continually evaluating approved projects that fit the organization’s mission. In 2011, the Fund provided money that allowed the unique Van Sickle Bi-State Park at Stateline to continue serving visitors ($25,000); helped fund the Tahoe City Lakeside Bike Trail, part of the envisioned around-the-lake bicycle path ($20,000); and supported publication of the Tahoe Environmental Research Center (Incline Village, NV) and University of California-Davis annual State of the Lake Report ($5,000). Click here for more information on our 2011 project investments.

Fund Raising
Buoyed by major Platinum level donations, the Fund’s $1 million first-year goal is within reach. The Fund’s Founding Circle donors alone contributed over $500,000 in 2011 and were thanked at the Fund’s first-ever dinner event on August 14, which drew a capacity 200 people to the Homewood Mountain Resort’s West Shore Café. Senator Dianne Feinstein joined governors Jerry Brown of California and Brian Sandoval of Nevada at the dinner. Over $100,000 was raised from other private donations, and a $200,000 grant from the California Tahoe Conservancy helped launch the organization.

Community parties in Tahoe and Reno have introduced community members to the Tahoe Fund and its efforts in support of environmental improvement projects needed at the lake to sustain the natural and economic integrity of Lake Tahoe. Similar events are planned for San Francisco, Sacramento and Las Vegas.

Leading the Public-Private Partnership at Lake Tahoe
The need for private money to supplement dwindling funding for projects was emphasized by Governors Brown and Sandoval as well as Senators Feinstein (D-Calif.), Harry Reid (D-Nevada) and Dean Heller (R-Nevada) at the 15th Annual Tahoe Summit on August 15, 2011.

The Tahoe Fund was chosen by the 2011 Summit host, Senator Feinstein, to be the Organizing Sponsor of the Summit, which brought the governors of California and Nevada together at Tahoe for the first time in a decade. Nearly 600 people attended the daytime event at Homewood. In addition, the Tahoe Fund hosted a luncheon on August 14 involving the leading non-profit, community and elected representatives from the entire Tahoe Basin for a round-table discussion of issues and solutions integral to a continued and sustained recovery effort for both the Tahoe environment and economy. Several Tahoe Fund board members participated in the conversation.

The Tahoe Fund met in 2011 with legislative leaders and staff in both California and Nevada to urge the states’ support of projects at Lake Tahoe. The Fund works closely with agencies such as the California Tahoe Conservancy, Nevada Division of State Lands, California State Parks, Nevada Division of State Parks and the many federal, state and local agencies and jurisdictions with a stake in the future of Lake Tahoe.

The Fund also landed a $120,000 Conservancy contract to promote sales of the Tahoe license plate, which funds projects in the Tahoe Basin.

On Tap in 2012

The Tahoe Fund has focused much of its efforts in this banner year in developing the organizational capacity to become the Tahoe Basin’s leader in delivering on-the-ground projects. To build the new organization, the Fund has:
  • Assembled a diverse, talented, and highly committed group of Board Members to lead the organization;
  • Established partnerships with the Parasol Tahoe and Tahoe Truckee Community Foundations to provide office space and organizational support; and
  • Developed a website, www.tahoefund.org, and other promotional materials to disseminate information and generate public and private support.

The tremendous outpouring of support from our Founding Circle members, individual donors, government agencies and officials, and community organizations speaks to the great need to fund and implement projects in the Basin. In 2012 and beyond, the Tahoe Fund will continue to grow as it leads the efforts to deliver projects that benefit Lake Tahoe, its residents, and its visitors.
