What runs deeper than Lake Tahoe? Our desire to preserve it.
During a 72 hour period earlier this week, California experienced a historic lighting siege that resulted in approximately 10,849 lightning strikes across the state causing more than 367 new fires. With some of these fires being close to the Basin, it is no surprise we are seeing so much smoke. Tahoe Living With Fire is a great source to help you stay fire prepared this wildfire season.
Tahoe receives an average of just 0.23 inches of precipitation in August. The only month with a lower average precipitation is July with the average of 0.18 inches. With all these storms lately, you may be surprised to find out that this month’s precipitation to date is only 45% of the average.
Since 2008, the Tahoe Resource Conservation District and the TRPA have run the Lake Tahoe Watercraft Inspection Program. This is no small feat, having inspected over 80,000 boats so far. Because of their hard work, no new aquatic invasive species have entered Lake Tahoe in this 12 year span. Historical data shows that Lake Tahoe’s average surface water temperature in July is 64.9ºF. Today, the lake is 64.1º, coming in just below that average. Tahoe’s famed clarity allows us to look deep. But be cautious, 18 inches below the surface maintains an average summer temperature of about 53º.
